Shots rang out and narrowly missed me. The tactical system went dark, and I realized that Tall Boy was targeting me, not Ng’atuny! I dove for cover. Tall Boy’s voice came over the com ‘The target has changed. Jack Gold is the target’. I made my way into the crowd, flashing off a quick text to Hiro as I left. “Tall Boy’s gone off mission. Not sure of team status. Continuing on alone.”
I faded into the crowd and made my way into the narrow alleyways of Paris alone. I ticked off a quick message to Katya as I fled, “Team’s gone rogue. Tall Boy’s off mission.” I was determined to finish the mission, with or without the team. I was hopeful that Hiro would make contact at some point. I wasn’t sure that I could get to the bomb without his assistance. I heard more automatic gunfire behind me as I put more distance between myself and Notre Dame. I managed to steal a cab from a tourist as a message came in from Katya, “I’m on it.” I wasn’t quite sure what that meant at the time, but I was hopeful that it was something good.
Hiro and I rendezvoused at the Arc du Triumph and began to search for the bomb. While we searched, apparently Katya intervened with the team. All of the intel was fake… Me, Ng’atuny, the Arc… everything. She sorted out the team and got them to the Arc. It seemed like we were being actively opposed. Dark Tangent dove into the matrix searching for clues and found us a solid lead – Terra First was at the Louvre.
We arrived at the Louvre only a few minutes later and stepped right into a firefight. Tall Boy started it off with some major property damage, and the bullets started flying. The geiger counter put the bomb directly below the central pyramid, so we fought our way down. I dropped two bullets into the brains of the guards and found it… a nuclear bomb.
I started in right away with my electronics kit, the countdown ticked away. Tall Boy and Dark Tangent did some matrix mojo to assist, and we ended up halting the countdown with only seconds left. I called Li and Katya and updated them on the situation… They updated us on news, as well.
London, Hong Kong, New York, Vladovostok… the list goes on. We saved Paris, but it seems that other cities were not so lucky.
