Waterdeep is a bustling, crowded, busy mercantile city where coin is king and tolerance for people of all races and religion is high. Waterdhavians live life at a fast pace, and despite their fervent work ethic, they rarely miss an opportunity to celebrate, with festivals often going on all day and all night. In Waterdeep, wealth brings respect, respect earns influence, and influence is power. 

 IMPORTANT PEOPLE

Dagult Neverember The previous Open Lord or Waterdeep and current Lord Protector of Neverwinter. Dagult was ousted from power and exiled in 1489 DR by Laeral Silverhand, upon charges of corruption. It was a fairly open secret that he had embezzled a large amount of gold from the city coffers. He was later unjustly accused or the murders of some of the Masked Lords of Waterdeep, but was cleared of those charges by Laeral Silverhand herself. Neverember resides in Neverwinter, and deals with his interests in Waterdeep via proxies.

Jarlaxle Baenre Mysterious author of a directive to ‘Fel’Rekt’, a note found in the possession of a drow strike team.

Laeral Silverhand The current Open Lord of Waterdeep and formerly known as the Lady Mage of Waterdeep. One of the most prolific magic item creators in recorded history, and one of the most accomplished spellcasters in Faerûn. Laeral returned to Waterdeep after the the end of Luruar, and swiftly managed to gain the support of the Masked Lords of the city, supplanting Dagult Neverember as Open Lord.

Manshoon The founder of the Zhentarim, until he was “slain” over a hundred years ago. However, Manshoon had created a dozen or more clones of himself. While it’s widely believed that all his clones were destroyed. The renegade faction of the Zhentarim in Waterdeep are said to work for one of these surviving clones.

Mirt “the Moneylender” A prodigious old rogue, and retired adventurer, Mirt made his fortune as an adventurer in Undermountain after a colorful career as a mercenary general. Mirt is one of the most infamous factors of Waterdeep.

Vajra ‘Blackstaff’ Safahr The seventh Blackstaff of Waterdeep, a title she ascended to in 1479 DR atfter her mentor Samark Dhanzscul was killed. Archwizard of Waterdeep, leads Force Grey.

Volothamp Geddarm A legendary traveler and storyteller, most famous for his guidebooks. As travelling scholar and minor wizard, Volo is always on the lookout for an exposé. He is recently returned to Waterdeep to start working on his next work, Volo’s Guide to Spirits and Specters, while he waits for royalty payments for his previous book.

 

.  FRIENDS, FOES, & ACQUAINTANCES

Dalakhar (deceased) A rock gnome spy working for Lord Dagult Neverember. Obtained the Stone of Golorr, but was killed by a fireball launched by the niblewright of House Gralhund.

Durnan The owner and proprietor of the Yawning Portal. Although he looks like a middle-aged man whose best days are behind him, Durnan has a sharp mind and can still swing a sword when he must.

Fenerus Stormcastle A retired brigand-turned-spy who operates under the guise of a lamplighter in Waterdeep. Seems to be acting as a go-between for some unknown factions and a mysterious group of Drow.

Floon Blagmaar A socialite, and old friend of Volo. Floon is a handsome fellow but not very bright. He used to work as an escort in festhalls but is currently unemployed.

Gralhund, Yalah and Orond Nobles and leaders of the House of Gralhund, which somehow become involved in the hunt for Neverember’s Enigma. Rumored to have had a falling out with the Zhentarhim.

Irbryth Apthamaun A sage knowledgeable about diverse areas, but specializing in the minutiae of Waterdeep’s broadsheets, and the history of Waterdeep. He can be contacted at his home.

Jalester Silvermane This soft-spoken, weathered warrior spends most nights sipping ale at the Yawning Portal. Silvermane is spies for the Lord’s Alliance, and  surveils adventurers to assess any threatsto the city’s order.

Kalain of the Nine Watersfamous Waterdavian painter, once commissioned to paint a portrait of Lord Dagult Neverember. Rumored to have carried on a long, torrid affair with the then Open Lord. Over the past several years has descended into maddness.

Lif the poltergeist The now deceased former proprietor and barkeep for Trollskull Manor was murdered by the hag Mirthkettle about 40 years ago, but his spirit still haunts the taproom (and, occasionally serves drinks).

Maester Woderick Bartlethorp A stout businessman, and collector of oddities. Runs a small exotic curiosities shop out of his home in the Sea Ward.

Renaer Neverember A noble member of the Neverember family, and estranged son of the former Open Lord of Waterdeep, Dagult Neverember. Ranaer has become a friend, and is known by the party to be a member of the Harpers.

Rongquan Mystere A Shou man with a braided goattee who owns the Seven Masks Theater in the Dock Ward. He claims to be a member of the Lords’ Alliance.

Urstul Floxin A high-ranking member of the Zhentarim in Waterdeep. Involved in some way in the Fireball incident, and the theft of the Stone of Golorr.

Victoro Cassalanter The devilishly handsome half-elf lord of House Cassalanter. Waterdavians know him as a successful banker, philanthropist, and worshiper of Lathander. Some of his business profits go toward feeding and sheltering the poor.

Westra Moltimmur An elderly actress, and one of Waterdeep’s great treasures. Now in her seventies and having been married no fewer than seven times, she has a brisk sense of humor and a zest for life.

Yagra Stonefisthalf-orc thug works as a bodyguard for the Zhentarim. When she’s not on active duty, she spends her time arm-wresting patrons for money.

Zardoz Zord The eccentric leader, ringmaster, and owner of the Sea Maiden’s Faire, a sea-faring carnival, hailing from Luskan. Zord has come to Waterdeep with several Nimblewrights, which are magical constructs designed to serve as a bodyguard, sentry, or valet.
